John Herbert Lewis

Jonesboro – John Herbert Lewis, the son of the late Millicent Linville and Leonard H. Lewis, was born May 2, 1920 in Augusta, Kansas and died August 25, 2012 in LaFontaine, Indiana at the Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, where he had been a patient for approximately one month. In 2002 John was stricken with West Nile disease and has been steadily declining since the infection.
John is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Myers Miller Lewis, who resides in Jonesboro, Indiana.
John is a 1938 graduate of Jonesboro High School and attended classes at IU and Purdue. John also served in the Army during World War II in the 27th infantry and fought in Saipan, the largest island of the Mariana Islands. After returning from the service he continued his employment at the Marion VA where he worked as a therapist for 40 years, retiring in 1980.
John was an avid gardener and collector. He was an active member of the Phi Delta Kappa in Marion and the American Legion.
Besides his wife, Dorothy, John is survived by his daughter, Sharon Lewis Wells, Marion; five grandchildren, Lori Soule, David (Maggie) Soule, Diane, Douglas and Amy Brubaker; three great-grandchildren, Justine, Colin and Gwendolyn; one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Robert (A. Margaret) Lewis and Larry (Bonnie) Lewis, both of Gas City; and sister-in-law, Alice Ricks. In addition, John is survived by five step children, Jack (Sue) Hartley, Sherry (Gary) Lotter, Vicki (Milton) Luoma, Lewis (Tamara) Miller and Chris (Janie) Miller; step grandchildren, Rachel Johnson Nierman (Mike), Liz Hartley, Rhett Hartley, Monica Hartley Treadwell, Marc (Nicole) Lotter, Andrea (James) Crilly, Laurie Miller, Brandie Miller, Amber (Ty) Powell, Whitney Miller, Ryan (Christina) Miller, and Kristi (Keith) Turner; 22 step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Lewis Brubaker Johnson; brother, Donald E. Lewis; stepson, Steven Johnson; and two previous wives, Katherine Schmidt and Leila Emmons.
Graveside Service will be at 11 am on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Riverside Cemetery, Gas City, Indiana with Tim Chambers officiating.
