Obituary of Ray Willey

Ray Willey, 73, died at 9:53 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012, in Marion General Hospital. He was born on March 17, 1939, in Van Buren, IN to Frank Willey and Hazel (Hayes) Willey. Both his parents and sister, Eveleyn Willey Hannefeld, Overland Park, KA, have preceded him in death.

He graduated from Marion High School in 1957, Marion College (now IWU) in 1966 with a B.S. in Education and a Master's of Arts from St. Francis College, Ft. Wayne in 1972.

Ray married Ann Chapman, Jonesboro on June 3, 1961 and moved to Gas City where they lived and recently celebrated 51 years of marriage.

He worked at Crystal Industrial Services, Jonesboro, as a salesman and supervisor from 1960-1965. Ray then began what would be his life's passion for teaching art for Mississinewa Community Schools. That career would span 33 years from 1967-1999.

During his teaching career, he coached tennis, golf and sponsored student organization and projects, including the design and construction of the 12' sculpture that stands at the entrance to the high school to this day.

Ray also served his community as a City Councilman for Gas City from 1977-1991. During his tenure, the city annexed and expanded east to I-69. He was a past member of both Gethsemane and St. Paul's Episcopal church as well as a member of Mississinewa Teacher's Assoc., Indiana State Teacher's Assoc; and the National Educator's Assoc.

Ray enjoyed working in his yard, golfing and swimming but found his greatest joy in spending time with his granddaughter, Christian.

Ray is also survived by his only child, Dr. James (Melissa) Willey, Anderson, IN and granddaughters Christian Willey, Anderson, Sophia and Sloane Willey, Gas City; sister, Betty (Al) LeFevra, Ft. Wayne and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 20, 2012, from 4-8:00 p.m. at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 East Main St., Gas City, IN.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Atkinson officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Gas City.
